Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and deep respect for those who served our country. At skilled nursing facilities across the South Shore, this holiday carries a particularly personal meaning. Many of our residents are veterans themselves, men and women who answered the call of duty and gave years of their lives in service to this nation.
At Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center, we are honored to care for veteran residents throughout the year, and Memorial Day gives us a special opportunity to recognize their sacrifice, share their stories, and bring the community together in appreciation.
Remembering the Service of Our Residents
Behind every veteran resident is a story of courage, sacrifice, and commitment. Some served in Korea, others in Vietnam, and some in peacetime roles that were no less important to the security of our country. These men and women left families behind, endured hardships most of us can only imagine, and carried those experiences with them through the rest of their lives.
In a skilled nursing setting, it can be easy for a resident’s identity to become defined by their medical needs. Memorial Day is a powerful reminder that our veteran residents are so much more than patients. They are heroes who shaped history, and their service deserves to be honored with intention and respect.
Families can play an important role in preserving these stories. If your loved one is a veteran, consider recording their memories, displaying service photos in their room, or sharing their history with the care team. When staff understand a resident’s background, they can provide more personalized, dignified care.
How Southwood Celebrates Memorial Day
Memorial Day at Southwood at Norwell Nursing Center is a day of celebration and reflection. Our activities team plans programming that honors every veteran in our community while creating a meaningful experience for all residents and their families.
Past celebrations have included:
- Patriotic ceremonies featuring the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, and recognition of each veteran resident by name and branch of service
- Musical entertainment with performances of classic American songs and military anthems
- Decorated common areas with red, white, and blue bunting, flags, and photo displays honoring our veteran residents
- Special meals featuring traditional American cookout fare, enjoyed together in a festive atmosphere
- Story-sharing sessions where veterans are invited to share their experiences with fellow residents and staff
These events are open to families, and we encourage loved ones to join us in honoring the veterans who call Southwood home. The pride on a veteran’s face when their service is publicly acknowledged is something that stays with you.
VA Benefits for Nursing Home Care
Many families of veteran residents are unaware of the financial assistance available through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Understanding these benefits can significantly reduce the cost of skilled nursing care:
VA Community Living Centers (CLCs) are VA-operated nursing homes available to eligible veterans. While these facilities may have waitlists, they provide comprehensive care at little or no cost to qualifying veterans.
The Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit is a monthly cash benefit available to wartime veterans and their surviving spouses who require assistance with daily activities. This benefit can be applied toward the cost of a skilled nursing facility, assisted living, or in-home care. In 2026, the maximum Aid and Attendance benefit for a single veteran is substantial enough to offset a significant portion of care costs.
State Veterans’ Homes in Massachusetts provide long-term care to eligible veterans. The Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea and the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke serve veterans from across the Commonwealth.
VA Respite Care provides temporary care for veterans whose primary caregivers need a break. Eligible veterans can receive up to 30 days of respite care per year through the VA system.
To determine eligibility, families can contact their local VA office, visit va.gov, or speak with a Veterans Service Officer in their town. Many South Shore municipalities, including Norwell, Hingham, and Weymouth, have dedicated Veterans Service Officers who can help navigate the application process.
Supporting Veteran Mental Health in Long-Term Care
Veterans in skilled nursing facilities may face unique mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress, service-connected depression, and adjustment difficulties that are compounded by aging and the transition to a care setting.
Memorial Day itself can be a complex day emotionally. While it is a celebration for many, it can also bring painful memories to the surface for veterans who lost friends in combat or who carry the invisible wounds of their service.
Staff at quality skilled nursing facilities are trained to recognize these sensitivities. At Southwood, our care team approaches veteran residents with an awareness of their service history and its potential impact on their emotional well-being. We create space for veterans to share their feelings, connect with one another, and receive support from professionals who understand the unique dimensions of military service.
Families can support their veteran loved one’s mental health by:
- Listening without judgment when they want to talk about their service
- Respecting their silence when they do not
- Connecting them with VA mental health resources or peer support groups
- Ensuring their care team is aware of any service-connected conditions
Community Memorial Day Events on the South Shore
Memorial Day on the South Shore is marked by community observances that families and residents can participate in or enjoy from afar:
Norwell hosts a Memorial Day parade and ceremony at the town common, with speeches from local officials, a wreath-laying ceremony, and participation from veterans’ organizations.
Hingham holds a moving observance at the town’s Memorial Wall, followed by a parade through the town center.
Marshfield features one of the largest Memorial Day parades on the South Shore, drawing thousands of spectators along its route.
Scituate offers a waterfront ceremony honoring local veterans with a service at the harbor.
These community events provide an opportunity for families to extend their Memorial Day celebration beyond the walls of the nursing facility and share the experience with their veteran loved ones through photos, videos, or, when possible, an outing to the event itself.
